What is the Alexander Technique?
Movement Education – We all have habits of posture and movement. None of us leave childhood without having acquired some habits that cause excess tension in our bodies. Alexander Technique is a unique form of movement education that helps free us from the force of our habits.
Relinquishing Ineffective habit – Whatever our habit is, it feels right to us, even if it is harmful and interferes with our work causing us pain. Most of us accept this until the tension causes injury, which we then blame on our bodies (bad backs, tennis elbow, etc.) Through learning the Alexander Technique we can recognize habits without judging them, which may address the source of the problem.
Release of Tension – Through verbal cues and the sophisticated hands-on guidance of the teacher, the student releases old tension and discards poor alignment. The body functions in greater comfort, according to it’s natural balance and design. Alexander Technique empowers us with choice, freeing us from harmful patterns.
Returning to balance – Without the interference of habit, we make beneficial choices about how best to perform whatever it is we wish to do. Movement becomes more dynamic as well as more pleasurable. We become more efficient. And, we respond better to stress.
